The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center announces two art exhibitions opening during Art Walk on Friday, July 5.
The Art of Cosplay is a group show in the downstairs Grand Atrium. On the second floor in the Capital Gallery is a solo exhibition by Julie Obney called Menagerie.
The Art of Cosplay showcases wearable art pieces created by several artists in the Southwest Florida art scene. The world of cosplay has grown over the past decade as a sustainable industry circulating the love of fandom, innovation, and imagination. For serious cosplay artists, it’s not just a once-a-year event like dressing up for Halloween, it’s a career and most importantly, a community of like-minded individuals who share a passion for creating, where imitation is a form of flattery and an accepted craft of the animated, comic, and televised entertainment industries.

Julie Obney

Upstairs in the Capital Gallery, Julie Obney exhibits a solo show called Menagerie. Her show reflects her journey as an artist and her current stage of collecting and choosing subjects based on impulsive action or random encounters of her choice. Years ago, she proudly graduated from Newcomb College at Tulane University in NOLA with a BFA in Studio Arts. After deviating from her artistic path she came back to painting with a fiery passion.
Opening night for both exhibitions will be July 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. including dance music by DJ Selecta AJ from 7 to 11 p.m. at Sidney’s Rooftop Sculpture Garden. Both art exhibits will be on display through July 25. The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is located at 2301 First St. in the historic downtown Fort Myers River District.
