The next free concert of the season by the Bonita Springs Concert Band will be Sunday, Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. at Riverside Park in downtown Old Bonita. Guest soloist will be James Jones.
The song lineup includes “Satchmo,” a tribute to Whitney Houston and “Thunder and Lightning Polka.”
Soloist James Jones will sing a medley of Al Jarreau songs. At the age of 12, James knew he wanted to be a singer after seeing the Fabulous James Brown perform at the Apollo Theatre, While in college at the University of Connecticut he became a part-time drama instructor. During his junior year, he switched majors to attain a bachelor’s degree in clinical psychology.
During the past 30 years, James has established himself as a vocalist having worked with Kool and the Gang, Jonathan Butler, Marion Meadows and many others. He moved from Atlanta to Fort Myers four years ago, where he is a licensed clinical psychologist.
The Bonita Springs Concert Band is under the direction of Gary Smith who retired after 24 years as conductor of the University of Illinois Marching Illini Band. This is the 7th season that Gary has led the band.
