With election season upon us, Charlotte Players is throwing its hat in the ring with Running Mates, a fast-paced political comedy opening on Oct. 9 at the community theater’s Langdon Playhouse in Port Charlotte.
Director Jenni Elliott has bought together a strong cast from the Players stable of volunteer actors to tell the story of a small-town Georgia mayor, Sam Storm (Mike Moody), who once again appears heading into the election unopposed. By his side is his wife, Sofia (J.J. Juliano), who has faithfully stood by her husband at every election over 20 years and worked to get him elected.
The campaign trail hits a huge bump in the road when Sam makes a derogatory remark about women that goes public, and suddenly his seat in office is threatened. Sam has some real competition when the last person he ever expected to run against him puts her name on the ballot: Sophia.
As husband and wife duke it out, one wonders if their marriage can withstand the political fisticuffs. And when an unexpected third candidate enters the race, look out.
Rounding out the cast are Christine Ammend, Bill Olson, Victoria Caruso, and Anaya Maitland as the Storm’s daughter Savannah.
Set designer Chris Smith, stage managers Ellen Rehaut and Barbara Holmes, and costumer Robin Jenkins complete the company.
Playwright Beth Kander is a Chicago-based writer with Southern and Midwestern roots whose scripts have been produced far and wide. The seven performances of Running Mates includes five evening shows and two matinees. Tickets are $22 for adults and $11 for students and may be ordered at or by calling 941-255-1022 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
COVID-19 precautions remain in effect. Audience members will have their temperatures taken upon entrance to the theater, will be seated far enough apart to meet recommendations, and will be provided with masks (if needed). Additional information is available at 941-255-1022. The Langdon Playhouse is located at 1182 Market St., Port Charlotte.
Also in October, auditions for The Best Christmas Pageant Ever! will be held at the Langdon at 7 p.m. Oct. 11 and 12.
