Choral Artistry, under artistic director Dr. Trent Brown, presents the Southwest Florida premiere performance of “Considering Matthew Shepard” on Sunday, April 10 at 4 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church at 4544 Coronado Pkwy in Cape Coral.
Nearing the 20th anniversary of Matthew’s death, composer Craig Hella Johnson, artistic director of the professional choir Conspirare, “wanted to create, within a musical framework, a space for reflection, consideration and unity around [Matthew’s] life and legacy.” The piece was first performed by Conspirare in 2016 in Austin, Texas.
Although unstaged, this contemporary style musical has many moving parts and employs multiple musical styles to reflect on both the life and death of Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old gay college student at the University of Wyoming, who was brutally murdered in 1998. The crime was horrific – like a modern-day crucifixion – and made headlines around the world. It led to the Congressional passage of the “Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act” in 2009.
This powerful piece ensures that Matthew Shepard’s story will never be forgotten.
