The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is celebrating the colorful Cuban culture through “Art Looking North” by the Miami Rodriguez Collection in September.
An opening reception takes place on Friday, Sept. 4 from 6 to 10 p.m.
Art Looking North: Cuban Art In The Rodriguez Collection is a selection made by Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center and its art curator, Cesar Aguilera. This collection showcases the work of 21 hand selected artists that have established the key tenets of visual language with global implications that reach beyond the island that is Cuba and its diaspora. The diversity of styles and media represent so much more than a Cuban identity as they come to be recognized in international venues as an affirmation of the island’s long tradition of creativity, academic, and technical excellence, even under the worst of circumstances.
Since the beginning, curators and specialized critics worked hand in hand with the artists. Names known both locally and internationally have been added to our initial intent with the objective of leaving a mark on the Cuban-American artistic production. Thanks to these collaborations, we now have an important showcase of critical texts.
Containing pieces spanning over 50 years, the Rodriguez Collection, dedicated to preserving the history and significance of Cuban art, is just the beginning of an ever-expanding gathering of works from artists representing the best of Cuba.
This show will continue to be on display Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. through Sept. 24.
