This October, the Syzygy Collaborative Art Project will present the third annual Dark Art exhibition, a juried collection of works by a wide variety of local painters, sculptors, photographers and mixed media artists who have all met the challenge of exploring the darkest themes in art.
The Dark Art exhibition has become a celebrated yearly tradition, encouraging artists of all ages and talents to come together in the spirit of Halloween and the macabre. Shock Rocked: Punk Subculture will be showing on the second floor gallery.
The opening reception takes place at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center on Friday, Oct. 4 during Art Walk from 6 to 10 p.m. and will include special performances throughout the evening. The highlight of the event begins around 8 p.m., when the acts scheduled to perform will begin. The first of which features BendyKat; Katarina Danks’ solo contortion act. Following this performance is a short fashion show titled “The Darkest Season” featuring looks and headdresses by Tonya Barnes. Finally, there will be a solo burlesque performance by Pixel Winters and more! Costumes are highly encouraged. Costumes may not include weapons that resemble or could easily be mistaken for real weapons.
Showing on the second floor in the Capital Gallery is a group show titled “Shock Rocked: Punk Subculture.” The aesthetic of punk rock has always existed to shock and intrigue its viewers. With years of representation under its belt, punk rock aesthetic continues to influence and inspire the youth of today. With deep roots in the subject of rebellion and political injustice, the backbone of punk art runs deeper than it’s edgy aesthetic. Challenging the mainstream idea of what art should look like, punk art exists to push the boundaries of what a larger society expects from the high-end art scene. This group show will feature artists Shelby Elmore, Jeremy Nemeth, Alexis Dunford and Spencer Duke.
Both shows will be on display through Oct. 18 and will end with a closing party that evening from 7 to 10 p.m. during Music Walk. To learn more about Syzygy, visit www.syzygyart.wordpress.com.
