The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is announcing a full open house of the entire building on Friday, May 7 during Art Walk from 6 to 10 p.m.
Come see the brand new Sidney’s rooftop sculpture garden and reception area, enjoy a walk through of the Davis School of Music classroom, check out Six Fingers Recording Studios, and view the two newest exhibitions.
Unfunctional Function, a solo art show from the beautiful mind of artist Juan Abuela, will be exhibited in the Grand Atrium. And showing in the Capital Gallery is a contrasting exhibition where artists of many talents were invited to participate in the Functional Art group show.

Juan Abuela

The unusual art show Unfunctional Function offers another look at how things are used, or not used. Things are not always what they appear to be once stripped of their functions. Striving to find balance by grasping at the intangible inner workings of the human mind, artist Juan Abuela bends the unbendable, makes workable the unworkable, and takes the impossible into the possibilities.
Abuela comes from a long line of artists and carpenters originating from the Republic of Cuba which is how he came to love the way simple timbers respond to his hands. He somehow hears its call to become what it wants to become rather than what is expected. His passion for balancing matter and spirit through color and design has fueled ambiguity in his works, creating what he calls a series of Unfunctional Function. Abuela invites the viewer into a contemplation of oneself while gazing directly into his own reflection.
In contrast to Unfunctional Function, the Functional Art group exhibit is being shown in the Capital Gallery as it illustrates quite simply that we live in a world of practicality.
The long awaited opening of Sidney’s rooftop sculpture garden and reception area is finally at hand. Join the vast art community as they celebrate the sharing of this phenomenal space atop the roof of the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center on the evening of Friday, May 7. Brand new at Sidney’s will be the serving of Sidney’s signature cocktails while everyone peruses the newest works of art including the spectacularly colorful Heaven’s Gate mural, created by Artsemble Underground’s Cesar Aguilera and Brian Weaver. Enjoy a bird’s eye view of the River District and take a walk through the sophisticated sculptures temporarily on display from Miami artists. These high-caliber pieces will most assuredly please the eye.
The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center is located at 2301 First St. in the historic downtown Fort Myers River District. Visit www.sbdac.com or call 239-333-1933 for more information.
