Each year, the Gulf Coast Symphony is committed to bringing a great American musical to life. Previous seasons have included musicals such as Carousel, South Pacific, Showboat and Oklahoma. This year, they will present another great American musical: Cabaret!
Daring, provocative and exuberantly entertaining, Cabaret explores the dark and heady life of Bohemian Berlin as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich.
Set in 1929-1930 Berlin during a time when Berlin, in the midst of a post-World War I economic depression, is transitioning from a center of underground, the musical focuses on the hedonistic nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub. The original Broadway production opened on Nov. 20, 1066, and became a box office hit that ran for 1,165 performances. The award-winning musical inspired numerous subsequent productions in London and New York as well as the popular 1972 film of the same name.
The Cabaret production with the Gulf Coast Symphony will run March 25 and 26 at Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW in Fort Myers. For tickets, visit www.gulfcoastsymphony.org or call 239-481-4849 or in person at the box office.
