Hirdie Girdie showcases Chris Christian, Shirley Hales

Hirdie Girdie Gallery welcomes new member artist Chris Christian who creates a variety of ceramic pieces such as bowls, vases, platters, canisters and hanging orchid vessels.
He uses both wheel thrown and hand formed methods, and works with both Raku and electric kiln firing. A retired architect, Chris was first introduced to ceramics in graduate school and was immediately drawn to the directness of the movement of clay in response to the hands, in contrast to the complexities of architecture.
Much of his inspiration is drawn from the Sanibel environment, and as he creates his pieces, he is especially interested in form, texture, positive/negative, and experimenting with color through a combination of glazes.

Shirley Hales

Guest artist for the month of April is watercolorist Shirley Hales. Shirley is well known in Southwest Florida as the founder of Harbour View Gallery in Cape Coral, and for her leadership roles in various community art organizations and events. She also teaches at Alliance for the Arts in Fort Myers and for Women of Watercolor in Naples. Her award-winning watercolors of wildlife, seascapes, and landscapes express her enjoyment of nature and passion for artistic realism.
Shirley has recently discovered the challenge of watercolor painting on black paper for a dramatic non-traditional approach to this medium. She will be exhibiting several paintings using this technique as well as more traditional pieces.
The gallery is hosting a reception on April 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. and everyone is invited to attend and view Chris’ and Shirley’s outstanding art, as well as the artwork of all the gallery’s award-winning artists.
Hirdie Girdie Gallery is located at 2490 Library Way on Sanibel.
