The installation of the Journey of Hope sculpture at the corner of Veronica Shoemaker Boulevard and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. began June 10.
A project in the making for two years, she is a magnificent work of art inspired by Dr. Veronica Shoemaker and the many women from the community that have worked tirelessly to advance the community and its residents.
This work was commissioned by Fort Myers Community Redevelopment Agency and it intends to pay homage to the leadership of the women that have served the Dunbar community. It’s a collaboration with the city’s public art committee and the Lee County Black History Society.
The artist Cecilia Lueza is from St. Petersburg. She reported the piece will be painted when weather allows.
The City of Fort Myers Public Art Committee issued a national call to artists around September of 2021, for a public artwork to be installed in a public space created on the south side of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and the southbound lanes of Veronica S. Shoemaker Boulevard.
The Public Art Committee reviewed 100 artists and selected three finalists to submit proposals. Cecilia Lueza was selected as one of three finalists and submitted a design proposal, schematic design and budget which was approved by the Public Art Committee.
Journey of Hope is a free-standing sculpture, composed of two main pieces, one is the profile of an African American woman looking up with yearning and determination in her eyes as a way to symbolize hope and dreams of a better future. The second sculpture is inspired by a sunburst that symbolizes the arrival of a new day where justice, equality and freedom will prevail.
The Community Development Agency (CRA) will provide funding ($98,500) for the design, execution, fabrication and installation of the artwork on the site. Artist Cecilia Lueza of Art Projects, Inc. in St. Petersburg, is to perform all services and furnish all supplies, materials, and/or equipment necessary for the design and fabrication of the artwork, according to city public records.
