The Southwest Florida premiere of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights opens March 27 at The Laboratory Theater of Florida.
Nominated for 13 and winner of four Tony Awards (including Best Musical), this high-energy musical follows the lives of the mostly Hispanic-American neighborhood of Washington Heights, NYC. In the Heights tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood, a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music.
It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams, and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind.

Director Carmen Crussard says, “I am honored to be directing the Southwest Florida premiere of In The Heights at The Lab. It beautifully illustrates the importance of community, despite our different cultural backgrounds. I hope this production will create a renewed appreciation for Latin-American and hip-hop culture in our own Southwest Florida community.”
Artistic Director Annette Trossbach adds, “An outstanding book by Pulitzer Prize-winner Quiara Alegria Hudes makes this musical experience lyrical, edgy, fun, and incredibly heartfelt. I’m thrilled to see the vibrant dancing and share in diverse stories on our stage.”
