The Florida Gulf Coast University Art Galleries of the Bower School of Music & the Arts presents Spencer Gillespie: Formal Fluidity, with an opening artist talk from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14 at ArtLab in the west side of the Library Building at FGCU.
The exhibition runs through Nov. 10, and is made possible with the generous support of the FGCU Alumni Association; the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture; and WGCU Public Media.
Spencer Gillespie graduated from FGCU in 2017 and recently completed her MFA at Colorado State University. This solo exhibition features a body of work exploring how identity performs within the realms of aesthetics through process and material selection. The paintings allow us to ask how a provisional approach fits within the continued legacy of abstraction and how identity is embodied through action and mark making rather than representational form.
Currently living and working in St. Paul, Minnesota, Gillespie will be at FGCU for the opening to discuss her work and her journey since graduating from FGCU.
Each year, FGCU Art Galleries produces an exhibition of art program alumni’s continuing work in fine art. Many of the exhibitions feature two or three artists, but when we have alumni who have completed their Master of Fine Arts, we celebrate this significant achievement with a solo exhibition in the ArtLab, located in the heart of FGCU’s campus.
For a preview of her work, visit Gillespie’s website at www.spencergillespie.com
The ArtLab is in the west side of the Library Building on FGCU’s main campus at 10501 FGCU Blvd. S. Parking for visitors to the gallery is available in Lot 7. Regular viewing hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The gallery is closed during university holidays.
