Legendary North Carolina baker Della (Linda Mizeur), finds herself in a true crisis of conscience and faith when her late best friend’s daughter, Jen (Emma Covert), asks her to make a wedding cake for her upcoming marriage…to another woman.
From Feb. 2 – Feb. 27, The Cake by playwright Bekah Brunstetter, is in the Tobye Studio Theater at The Naples Players.
Della’s life is turned upside down by this turn of events – she can’t really make a cake for such a wedding, can she? Normally, she leaves judgment calls like this to her husband, Tim (Brad Brenner), but this time she has to think for herself. As if this wasn’t too much for baker Della to handle, Jen’s fiancee, Macy (Makayla Davis), furthers the cultural divide by avoiding gluten and sugar altogether and dismisses Della when she excitedly tells her she’s going to be on a baking show.
Family and ideology collide in this touching play in which the main characters have to face their differences and work through them. There are no clear answers to life’s toughest questions, and this play invites audiences to join Della on a journey of curiosity and humanity.
CEO and artistic director Bryce Alexander says, “The Cake gives audiences an opportunity to explore a very current ideological issue from multiple perspectives. This play is a true reflection of a real-life challenge that doesn’t have one simple answer. In this performance, and in life, what we can hope to gain is insight and empathy, which oftentimes gives more clarity and a deeper understanding than cut-and-dry answers.”
Directed by Christine Cirker, with stage management by Adam Garcia, costume design by Dayne Sabatos, lighting design by Abby May, scenic design by Starlet Jacobs, prop design by Jillian Feigenblat, and sound design by Jacob Myny.
Tickets to attend this intimate venue are expected to sell out quickly. Regular price tickets are $42 per person and flex season ticket holders can purchase additional tickets at $35.
A red carpet event open to the public is slated for Wednesday, Feb. 2 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and features local vendors, food, drinks and live music from the band Chariot. Visit www.Naplesplayers.org or call the box office today at 239-263-7990 to secure your tickets.
